Rust Technique

Step One:
Refer to step one of Metal Techniques. Remember, remove tape if you are not completing your project the same day.

Step Two:
Reapply masking tape. Crumple up a wad of clean cotton cheesecloth and dip into Pewter Glaze. Apply the glaze, dabbing at the surface in the random diagonal pattern that looks most natural. Pewter Glaze will stay workable only about 5 minutes so proceed quickly. Avoid drafts from fans or open windows that could cause premature drying.

Step Three:
Sponge on the next color using a damp natural sea sponge. Be sure to load the sponge evenly and use a quick, light pouncing motion. Add more color to the areas around the Pewter Glaze, creating layers to look like a naturally aged finish. Switch to a smaller sponge when working in the corners or tight spaces. Carefully remove tape and allow to dry overnight.
